Setting the tone for each day

To eliminate waste and maximize efficiency, we must ensure that all team members are aligned and informed. One effective way to achieve this is through morning huddles. Typically starting each morning at 6:30AM and lasting 10-15 minutes, these brief, daily gatherings set the stage for a successful day by facilitating clear communication, enhancing safety, and boosting overall productivity. Over time Donley’s has continuously improved this process and determined best practices for an effective morning huddle.

Best practices for effective morning huddles

Create a Consistent Agenda: Having a consistent agenda helps maintain structure and ensures that no important topics are overlooked. Our agenda includes a review of the previous day's progress, a discussion of the day's tasks, safety reminders, and a Q&A session.

Encourage Participation: Morning huddles should be interactive, with input from all team members. Encourage all team members to voice any concerns, ask questions, and share suggestions. This inclusive approach not only fosters a sense of ownership but also allows for the identification of small issues before they escalate into big problems.

Focus on Safety: Set the tone for the day by always prioritizing safety discussions during morning huddles. Highlight any specific hazards for the day, review safety procedures, and ensure that all workers have the necessary PPE and training. Reinforcing the importance of sending everyone back to their families at the end of the day.

Use Visual Aids: Visual aids, such as progress photos, drawings, charts, or whiteboards, are used in morning huddles. These tools help illustrate key points, making it easier for team members to understand complex information and retain important details.

Benefits of morning huddles

Enhanced Communication:  Effective communication is the backbone of any successful construction project. Morning huddles provide an opportunity for team members to share important information, such as changes in the project scope, updates on timelines, and any potential hazards. By ensuring that everyone is on the same page, huddles minimize misunderstandings and help prevent costly mistakes.

Increased Safety: Our daily goal is to operate incident free. Morning huddles allow supervisors to highlight safety protocols, discuss potential risks, and remind workers of the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE). By prioritizing safety at the start of each day, huddles create a culture where safety is a shared responsibility, significantly reducing the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

Improved Productivity: Donley’s team members like to go to work when a plan is in place.  When team members are clear about their tasks and responsibilities, productivity naturally increases. Morning huddles help in setting daily goals, assigning tasks, and addressing any obstacles that might impede progress. This structured approach ensures that everyone knows what is expected of them, leading to a more organized workflow and better jobsite morale.

Team Cohesion: Morning huddles foster a sense of unity and collaboration among team members. By regularly coming together to discuss the day's activities, workers build stronger relationships and develop a collective sense of purpose. This camaraderie not only boosts morale but also enhances teamwork, which is essential for the successful completion of any project.
